FACELIFT PROCEDURE
The first step during a facelift procedure involves general anesthesia. This is usually done by an intravenous injection. Additionally, other procedures may be also performed that may improve the facelift results. Drs. Miller and Steinbrech may recommend adding facial implants or doing fat transfer to contour facial structure through soft tissue augmentation. Resurfacing techniques may also be done to enhance the tone and texture of the skin. All of this will be discussed during your initial consultation with the surgeons so the procedure will give you the results you desire.
The facelift procedure itself takes between two to three hours once the general anesthetics have been administered.
There are several choices of the incision to take depending on the amount of change you want to have on the skin. The choices are traditional facelift and limited incision facelift.
A traditional facelift involves redistribution of fat starting from the face, jowls, and neck. The underlying tissues are repositioned while the skin is redraped over the uplifted contours. The incision starts from hairline at the temples through the ear to end at the lower scalp. Excess skin is trimmed away to improve the firmness of the face.
Limited incision involves correcting loose skin on the neck, sagging jowls and accumulated fat. The limited incision starts at the earlobe and ends in the lower scalp.
The incision lines are closed without tension and gently to ensure the skin is not pulled tight. Absorbable and nonabsorbable sutures are usually used and can stay in for up to seven days post –operatively. The incision lines are then hidden under the hairline after the skin has healed.
There is bandaged by placing a support garment around the head and under the chin. A layer of cotton wool underneath helps control the amount of swelling and bruising.
A facelift is a painless procedure, although patients may experience tightness in the chewing muscles. Patients could experience some swelling and bruise on the face that may feel uncomfortable. Tension and tightness on the areas of neck and face will be experienced although not all the time. After the procedures, patients should sleep with their heads elevated for at least two weeks. This is to ensure the swelling has been alleviated. If you had a mouth incision, Dr. Miller and Dr. Steinbrech may restrict your diet for the benefit of the outcome.
