Breast augmentation goes by many names. This procedure is also called breast implants, breast enlargement and breast enhancement. This is a procedure where a doctor surgically places a silicone or saline implant inside the breast cavity to increase the size or alter the shape of the breast. Breasts that are not proportionate to each other can be balanced out through adding the same size implant to even them out. Breasts can be reshaped, enhanced, and given an overall improved appearance through this surgical procedure.
WHY HAVE BREAST AUGMENTATION?
There are both medical and personal reasons to get breast augmentation surgery. Some women suffer from issues of asymmetry, mastectomies, and tubular breasts problems. There are also women who suffer severe back pain due to oversized breasts. This is another common medical reason for breast augmentation surgery. These medical conditions are just a few of the more common medical reasons why women seek breast augmentation.
On the personal side of things, women who feel their breast are too small, too big, not the right size or sag from breastfeeding get breast implants to make them feel better about the way their breast look. In both cases, the ultimate goal is to look and feel better about their personal appearance.

BREAST AUGMENTATION FAQS
How long will the procedure last?
The length of a breast augmentation surgery will be based on the type of implant, your health, and personal situation during the surgery. Barring any complications, on average, a breast augmentation surgery can last from one to two hours.
What can I expect after the procedure?
Your surgery was a success and you will find that after your surgery, you have been taken to the recovery room for rest. Your breast will be wrapped in surgical gauze or placed in a surgical bra. You will experience a great deal of pain, tenderness, swelling, and bruising in the breast area. You can expect to have these symptoms for about a month or so. Dr. Steinbrech will prescribe pain medication to help with the discomfort.
With any incision or surgery, infections are always possible. If you find yourself suffering with a fever, bleeding, redness, or abnormal warmth of the breast, you need to seek immediate medical attention for infection. Drs. Miller and Steinbrech will give you instruction on how to take care of your breast after surgery.
Are there risks?
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved. The biggest risk is rupture of the implant. Implants have a shelf life as does everything else because nothing last forever. The best way to prevent rupture is to make sure you are being provided with good quality implants and regular follow-up care. This will increase the life of your implants and keep you safe.
You can also be at risk for infection and bleeding after surgery. The surgeon can minimalize this risk by applying a tumescent solution on the breast to reduce the possibility of bleeding and using antibiotics to prevent a possible infection.
One of the most common risks is scar tissue hardening surrounding the implant, otherwise known as capsular contracture. This condition can cause pain and discomfort around the area and can make the breast look abnormal. You can also acquire rippling in the breast. These effects are caused by bleeding or infection, so it is crucial to follow all precautions once you leave the outpatient surgical facility at Gotham Plastic Surgery in New York City.
How soon can I return to work?
Breast augmentation surgeries are not surgeries that keep you down for too long. On average, women have one to two days of recovery, a few days of minimal activity, and several weeks of swelling and pain.
Women who do not have strenuous jobs will have a one week recovery time. Women with more strenuous and active jobs will need at least three to four weeks recovery time. Breast augmentation surgery is a surgery affecting muscles. These types of surgeries require a longer time to heal.
Women have many reasons for undergoing breast implant surgery. Whether those reasons are medically related or personal is not really the issue. The important key to note is women undergo this procedure to make themselves feel good about who they are. How you see yourself in the mirror is just as important as how you feel inside your body. Breast implant surgery, for some women, provides that look they need to feel good about what they see on the outside. We are here to help them accomplish the goal.
